Ozubulu killings: Police visits South Africa in search of suspects

Men of the Nigerian Police Force have trailed some suspects of the August 6, 2017 killings at St Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Anambra State, to South Africa, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar has said.

Umar made the revelation on Wednesday when some Ozubulu widows carried a protest to his office at Amawbia, Anambra State.

He assured the people of Ozubulu that those involved in the killings must be punished.

He said the Federal Government, alongside the Nigerian Police are working in tandem with the South African government in making sure that justice was done on the issue and the perpetrators of the crime are bought to book.

Umar said the witnesses in the case must be protected, adding that the Command was ready for any body who wants to foment trouble in the area.

He said,

“We are resolute, we are determined, we must make sure the community and its people are protected and we must go after anyone involved in this case, no matter how connected the person is.”

He asked the people to go about their normal business, adding that the Police were on top of the situation.

The Ozubulu widows had stormed the state police headquarters in Amawbia, demanding justice over the killings in the community.

Speaking through their leader, Mrs. Nonye Onwuzulike, the women told the police that witnesses in the matter were being threatened by unknown persons across the globe.

On August 6 2017, some unidentified gunmen had stormed St Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu and opened fire on worshipers that came to church for the early morning mass.

About 13 persons lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in the massacre that was allegedly directed by indigenes of the community residing in South Africa.

According to a survival of the attack identified as Joel:

“We were in the middle of the service when I noticed that a vehicle was parked outside. The car later moved from the spot and turned back few minutes later and parked at the same spot.

A young man came into the church through the back door of the church and started shooting while backing the alter. Many people tried to escape through the two doors and to our surprise, the gunman started shooting at them on both doors. It was a terrible thing. I did not rush out like others immediately and it was most of the people who tried to escape that were either killed or wounded.”
