Manchester United fans go crazy for Romelu Lukaku after passionate celebration when Nemanja Matic struck winner against Crystal Palace

Romelu Lukaku has had to absorb plenty of criticism in his first season at Manchester United , but while his form in front of goal may be in question, his passion certainly is not.

As Nemanja Matic hit the stunning goal that sealed Manchester United’s comeback win against Crystal Palace, fans noticed Lukaku’s passionate celebration and saw it as a new reason to love him.

The Serbian midfielder scored with a 30-yard strike in injury time as Jose Mourinho ‘s men fought back from 2-0 down to leave Selhurst Park with an unlikely three points – and no player appeared happier about it than Lukaku.

As the ball hit the back of the net, Lukaku declined the chance to join his team-mates in pandemonium. Instead, he fell to his knees and punched the ground with the kind of passion you’d only expect to see from a one-club hero like Gary Neville.

It meant Lukaku, who scored the equalising goal earlier in the game, was the talk of Twitter among Manchester United fans after the game with footage of his celebration soon going viral.

One fan wrote that the striker reminded him of the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson while another described his desire to win as ‘incredible’.

A lot was expected of the Belgium striker following a £75million move from Everton last summer and plenty of pundits would agree that 14 Premier League goals is a below-par return.

But the 24-year-old’s selfless teamwork has earned praise. Indeed, his return of eight assists across all competitions is evidence that he is far from a selfish striker and he has sacrificed the chance to fill his boots for the good of the team.

Speaking in December, Mourinho said Lukaku had driven himself into the red zone with his exhaustive efforts and said he was in need of a rest.

‘The boy is tired. He is physically a monster but not a machine and he is feeling it,’ Mourinho said.

‘The guy is fantastic for me. But no, I cannot rest him.’
