Rainstorm destroys 200 houses in 4 local government areas in Ekiti state
Rainstorm has destroyed over 200 houses in Ekiti State in the first two months of the year. The General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Jide Borode, broke the news in Ado-Ekiti , the state capital.
He expressed shock at the effect of the rainstorms and the loss suffered by residents whose houses were destroyed. Mr. Jide Borode, who spoke in Ado Ekiti , Ekiti state, said the disaster mainly affected four local government areas of the state.
Borode, however, noted that there was the need to be grateful to God as there was no report of death.
He listed the affected communities to include Ado metropolis, Emure, Ise and Erinjiyan, in the Ekiti West LGA of the state where he estimated the damage to run into hundreds of millions of naira.
Borode called on the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the victims, saying the effect of the damage was too massive to be left for the state government alone to handle.
He warned people in the state to avoid building houses in flood-prone areas, adding that the best period to acquire land was during the rainy season when flood prone-areas could be easily identified.
Also, No fewer than 30 buildings had their roofs removed at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta Ogun state, during a rainstorm which lasted for about an hour.
Scores of students and some members of staff who were inside these buildings narrowly escaped death. The storm was said to have started around 2:30 pm when students were sitting for their second-semester examination for 2016/2017 session in a 1,500-seater hall.
The rainstorm also affected the office of the Provost, the vocational education department, the office of the Dean, the Micro-Teaching Laboratory, Students Union building, and hostels.
