The Green Party of Nigeria (GPN) on Saturday called on the Federal Government to end the “senseless killings” across the country as soon as possible.

The Chairman of the Edo Chapter of the party, Mr Roy Oribhabor, said in an interview with newsmen in Benin on Saturday that the call became necessary in view of the recent killings in Benue state alleged to have been perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen.

Newsmen report that at least eight states in the country are experiencing attacks by herdsmen. These include Enugu, Benue, Ekiti, Adamawa, Imo, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Delta, following the kidnap and killing of His Royal Majesty, Akaeze Ofulue III of the Ubulu-Uku.

Oribhabor, who described the Benue massacre as unfortunate, said it was the responsibility of the government government to as matter of urgency and concern, stop the wanton destruction of lives and property of Nigerians by their fellow countrymen.

The chairman of the party said the killings were not only gruesome, unacceptable, callous, inhuman and wicked, they should be wholly and openly condemned and not be politicised.

He called on the country’s security agencies to unravel those behind the incessant killings.

He expressed the party’s empathy for the families of those who lost their loved ones in the killing episodes as well as the governments of Benue, Rivers and Kwara.

He called for the declaration of a state of emergency in the states with high rate of the wanton killings and for the security agencies to get to the root of the agenda behind the killings.

“We are seriously alarmed with these killings, especially against the background that the killings have now shown to the world that life is now the cheapest commodity in Nigeria.

“The country is now a banana republic where people can just wake up from their sleep and take another person’s life without looking back.

“It is for this reason that we as a party are calling on the Federal Government to be more proactive than reactive to this matter of senseless killings across the country.
