Marco Materazzi Reveals What He Said to Zinedine Zidane Before 2006 World Cup Final Head Butt

Marco Materazzi has revealed what he said to Zinedine Zidane during that infamous World Cup final in 2006, reports Give Me Sport.

France, led by Zidane, played Italy, led by Fabio Cannavaro, in the final and the score was 1-1 after 90 minutes, thanks to, ironically, goals from Materazzi and Zidane. .

Five minutes into the second half of extra-time, Zidane head butted Materazzi in the chest and was shown a red card as a result. Italy went on to win 5-3 on penalties for their first World Cup since 1982.

Rumours have long been circulating that Materazzi said something insulting about Zidane’s family, but claimed that he would have never have insulted the Frenchman’s mother, as his own mother died when he was 15-years-old.

But the defender has said that he said something about the French captain’s sister that provoked him into the head, but that saw him on the receiving end of the most famous red card in football.

This dismissal saw Zidane join Rigobert Song as the only two players to have been sent off at two different World Cup finals, and only the fourth player to be sent off in a World Cup final, the first time any player had been sent off in extra time in the final.
