A young girl was reportedly ‘mauled by a shark ‘ on a Spanish tourist beach close to a resort popular with Brits.

The 11-year-old was bitten on the foot while swimming in the waters off Grao de Moncofa, which is close to tourist resort Benicassim.

The girl was reportedly bleeding heavily after the attack, which lifeguards said they could not confirm was a shark attack.

She was rushed to hospital where she was treated for the injury, El Periodico Mediterraneo reported.

Lifeguards said they had “never seen anything like it”.

They also suspect it may have been a small species of blue shark, which is around 70cm long.

Other holidaymakers were warned to avoid the area where she was bitten.
