About 700,000 eggs at the centre of a contamination scare in Europe have been distributed in the UK – much higher than initially thought.

The Food Standards Agency said hundreds of thousands of eggs involved in the scare from Dutch farms are thought to be in the UK.

This is much higher than the initial 21,000 first estimated earlier this week.

The contamination scare involves the pesticide Fipronil with concerns raised in the Netherlands.

The substance is said to have been used “inappropriately” in cleaning products on chicken farms although it is not authorised around food producing animals.
