They did it! It was a pulsating Champions League final between fierce cross-city rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, but there can only be one winner. Congratulations go to Real Madrid for beating Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout!
You can’t say they didn’t deserve it! What a Champions League Final that was, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid giving their all in a pulsating match on May 28. But as is with all these things, one amazing sports franchise has to be the loser for the occasion. Our commiserations go to Atletico, but how great is it that Real are taking all the plaudits right now for their penalty shootout win and golden-boy extraordinaire Cristiano Ronaldo delivered the winning penalty!
Diego Simeone ‘s men, with star-forward Antoine Griezmann orchestrating things up front, were ready to take on Real Madrid and Cristiano.
But it was Real Madrid’s captain extraordinaire,
Sergio Ramos that got things off to an amazing start after just 14 minutes. German star Toni Kroos whipped in a dangerous free-kick that was flicked on by Gareth Bale. That header did all the work as all Sergio had to do was tap the ball home from close-range past Atletico’s super-goalkeeper Jan Oblak .
Antoine could’ve altered the scoreline right at the beginning of the first half when Atletico were awarded a penalty after a foul by Pepe on Fernando Torres . However, Antoine crashed his shot against the crossbar and Real survived the scare.
Atletico pressed hard for an equalizer, and were forcing all the plays. However, they just kept missing their opportunity and the luck wasn’t on their side. That was until 11 minutes from time when Yannick Carrasco slammed in an effort from close range, and he even got a kiss from his girlfriend for good measure in the stands!
No one could separate these two sides, so the game went to a penalty shootout. Lucas Vasquez put Real 1 up. Antoine made up for his earlier miss by making 1-1. Marcelo was up next and he made no mistake 2-1. Gabi stepped up next and his was magnificent striking the ball high in the corner – 2-2. Gareth Bale disguised his penalty brilliantly to make 3-2. But Atletico came back to 3-3. Next up was Real’s captain Sergio, and he easily placed the ball home to make it 4-3! JuanFran was the first player to miss, hitting the ball against the post, with Cristiano stepping up next for Real to win the game!
These games are often decided by the narrowest of margins, and with the amount of technically gifted players on display, it was no surprise that this was a close game. But at the end, something just had to give.
