WTF! Nigeria Spent N660 billion On Imported Chicken In 2014

Published

This is really shocking information. The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has revealed that 1.2 million metric tons (MT) of frozen chicken valued at N660 billion was imported into the country in 2014.
According to PAN, these numbers are not only four times higher than what was produced locally in the country but also exceeding the current industry capacity. This shocking revelation by Dr. Ayo Oduntan, the National President of PAN, came at “The Health and Economic Implications of Smuggled Poultry Products on Nigeria Economy” workshop in Abuja held today where Dr Ayo also revealed that Nigeria presently consumes 1.5 million MT of frozen chicken annually. I don’t understand why imported chicken would be taking so much of our country’s money. Is it that our local farmers cannot give us equally as good chicken?
