Gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram sect members, around 5am on Friday morning, July 18, attacked Damboa in Borno State, killing several people in the assault, according to Premium Times.
The attack is coming a day after 27 people were reportedly killed by the sect in a twin attack on July 15, around 6pm, in Sabon Gari village of Damboa LGA.
According to a vigilante official in Maiduguri, Abbas Gava, his men in the Damboa village said some youth vigilante group, known as Civilian-JTF, and few vigilante officials were available in Damboa to protect the people.

Mr Gava said: “Since the attack, Damboa has no police or soldiers. It is only the vigilantes that are there and we know their limitations. The casualty could be very high because my contacts in Damboa said they are still picking and piling the corpses. But many houses, nearly half of what remains of the several attacked town has been burnt”.
Soldiers had reportedly deserted Damboa following several attacks on the military base by the dreaded Boko Haram sect as attempts by soldiers to return to Damboa military base since two weeks ago are said to have failed. The insurgents took over the highway and continued to engage soldiers in ambush attacks that have forced them to return to Maiduguri on two occasions.
A senior security personnel, who prefers to be anonymous, confirmed Friday’s attack to PREMIUM TIMES. He said: “No details on extent of damage or casualty yet.”
Damboa local government area and Borno State as a whole have been under attacks by the insurgents in the past few weeks.
On July 5, it was reported that Boko Haram sect attacked a military base and police Station in Damboa Local Government area of Borno State killing no fewer than 12 soldiers, 4 policemen including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and four civilians. Damboa town is 85km south of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Boko Haram, an Islamist group, has caused havoc in Nigeria, especially in the Northern states, through a wave of bombings, assassinations and now abductions.
The sect, who have claimed responsibility for several attacks, have continued to carry out their incessant attacks on Borno communities, despite the state of emergency in the area, imposed by the Federal Government.
On July 1, a bomb explosion occurred in Maiduguri, Borno State, which left 18 people dead and 55 severally injured.
On June 25, the suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed about 16 soldiers at a military block-post, Bulabulin Ngaura in Damboa LGA of Borno.
However, the most vicious terrorist attack of the year was abduction of over 200 Chibok school girls on April 14 in Borno State. The majority of the victims are yet to be freed
