General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd), Wednesday,  said  he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on his life after he was targeted by suicide bombers in Kawu area of Kaduna. In a statement, Buhari said: “I  am personally involved in a clearly targeted bomb attack today at about 2:30pm on my way to Daura.“The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt, came from a fast moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car, but was blocked by escort vehicle.“We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram my car and instantly detonated the bomb which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy.
“Unfortunately, when I came out of my vehicle, I saw many dead bodies littered around. They were innocent people going about their daily business who became victims of mass murder.“Thank God for His mercy, I came out unhurt, but with three of my security staff sustaining minor injuries. They have since been treated in hospital and discharged”, he saidLatest reports coming in from northern Nigeria suggest that Nigeria’s former Head of State, Gen Muhamadau Buhari was the target of one of the bomb attacks that happened in Kaduna on Wednesday, 23 July, 2014.
Sahara Reporters reports that a source close to Buhari informed that a second bomb explosion that rocked the Kawo bus station in Kaduna today appeared to have targeted Buhari’s convoy.
It was gathered that the retired general survived the attack but three of his aides and security personnel traveling with Buhari to Daura, his hometown, were confirmed injured in the afternoon blast.
The source said that the bombers had trailed the former head of state’s convoy and detonated the bomb as the convoy neared a bridge in Kawo.
Commenting on the tragic incident, Jasper Azuatalam, Chairman, Buhari Vanguard, informed that the retired General was in good condition, adding that he was only shaken up by the trauma of the attack.
“Three of General Buhari’s aides were injured this afternoon in the explosion at Kawo,” Jasper said.
He however, disclosed that the injuries were not life- threatening.
It could be recalled that two days ago, Gen. Buhari had issued a statement warning President Goodluck Jonathan and his government on their attempt to muscle the opposition and endanger Nigeria.
The Presidency raised an eyebrow to the statement…
Another reliable source confirmed that an earlier bomb blast that allegedly killed scores of people today was targeted at an a popular Islamic Cleric Dahiru Bauchi who was delivering Ramadan lecture at Murtala Square in Kaduna.
As at the time of filing this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the two high-profile attacks, but a security operative in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, said the explosions were likely the handiwork of the extremist Islamists group, Boko Haram.
The Boko Haram insurgents had claimed responsibility for terror attacks that had occurred in norther Nigeria and other part of the country.
The United Natons (UN) have recently published a report that stated that over 4,000 people have lost their lives in Boko Haram attacks since 2009.
The militants group and its leader, Abubakar Shekau, were blacklisted by the UN in June 2014.
