'University carrying capacity up from 600,000 to 1million in three years’- Minister of Education

The carrying capacity of Nigerian university has increased from 600,000 to 1 million over a period of three years.
The Supervising Minister of Education, Barr.  Nyesom Wike, made this known yesterday, while presenting Education sector transformation under president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration to the public in Abuja.
He also said the enrolment rate for the basic education has increased to 24million.
According to Wike, “Human capital access is the core objective of the Ministry of Education and the Federal government is committed to promoting access and quality of education in the country. this would address the challenge of low enrolment of girls in schools, the high number of out-of-school children which stand at 10 million and high illiteracy among the youths and adults.
“The carrying capacity of Nigerian universities that stood at 600,000 was increased to 1 million over a period of three years, through establishment of 14 new federal universities, up grading of Nigeri Police Academy, Wudil to a degree awarding status, establishment of the National Maritime University Okerenkoko and increased in the number of federal university from 28 – 41.
“And the enrolment in Polytecnics and Monotecnics increased from 338, 040 in 2010 to 376,710 in 2013”.
He said “Consistent federal government programmes and support for education has led to improved enrolment in Basic education, for public primary school, from 22.1 million in 2011 to 24.3 million in 2013 and in public secondary schools, from 4.4 million in 2011 to 4.8 million in 2013.
“So far the federal government has released as of June 2014, N14.8 billion to Universal Basic Education, in 2013 N38.1 billion was released.
“The federal government is progressively supporting states in the increase of enrolment to basic education. N139 billion granted states between 2010 and 2014 for the development and rehabilitation of infrastructure, learning resources and capacity development in basic education”.
Wike stressed that for the past three years budgetary allocation for education sector has increased from N2 billion to N500 billion which is a 500% increase.
He said one of the key things the federal government has been able to achieve is the free textbook initiative and the government has been able to distribute free text books to the tune of 126.2 million text books. About 10,000 classrooms were constructed, 6,573 classrooms were renovated, 509,079 pupils furniture were provided,  286 boreholes, 4,353 computer sets, 887 administrative furniture, 26 laboratories and 19 staff rooms .
