Residents of Gusau, Zamfara State, were on Tuesday thrown into confusion following the discovery of assorted arms and ammunition in a serving lawmaker’s house (names withheld) by police officers.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the discovery comprised several AK47 rifles, boxes of live ammunition and several cans of teargas. He further revealed that a grenade was also discovered in the lawmaker’s other house at Tsafe town.
He said that the news of the findings in Gusau and neigbouring Tsafe town, sparked pandemonium, resulting in gridlock traffic as motorists and residents were scampering for safety.
The source said that the raid was believed to have followed a tip-off, adding that some persons that were arrested by the police in Kano State confessed that they keep their arms and ammunition in a lawmaker’s house in Zamfara.
“We learnt that it was based on this revelation that the security operatives stormed his two houses in Tsafe town and Takama in Gusau metropolis” the source said.
It was also gathered that the development followed the questioning of one of the chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) by security operatives last month over his alleged ties with cattle rustlers in the state.
Meanwhile, when the lawmaker was contacted, he said he had given a written statement to the police when he was invited for questioning, noting that he has nothing more to say.
DSP Lawal Abdullahi, the state police spokesperson confirmed the incident, and revealed that the raid was carried out by a special police team from Abuja, and declined answering further questions.
