The Premier League club are closing in on their second major signing of the summer hot on the heels of sealing a £28 million deal for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera
Southampton full-back Luke Shaw is set for a medical at Manchester United ahead of a summer move to Old Trafford, Goal understands.
The England international flew into Manchester airport on Wednesday with the rest of his England team-mates following their premature exit from the World Cup and is set to finalise the terms of his much-anticipated transfer.
United have beaten off stiff competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham for the 18-year-old by offering the left-back an astonishing financial package.
Shaw will be handed a deal worth £160,000-a-week that will make him the highest-paid teenager in world football. United had been hoping to complete the transfer before the World Cup but were hindered by Southampton’s own persuit of a new manager.
Ronald Koeman was duly appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor earlier this month and the south coast club are now expected to accept an offer of around £27 million for a player with just three senior international caps to his name.
Shaw will become United’s second major signing of the summer after the club confirmed Athletico Bilbao’s Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera as the first new addition of manager Louis van Gaal’s reign earlier on Thursday.
The 24-year-old agreed a five-year contract understood to be worth £145,000-a-week and revealed he cannot wait to get started at his new club.
He told the club’s official website: “Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true.
“I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic Club in the Uefa Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far. I have joined United to do all I can to help the team reach the club’s objectives.
“Having arrived on Tuesday, I’m excited to now be living in Manchester and I can’t wait for my first game in United’s famous red shirt.
“I will never forget my time with Athletic Club and I’d like to thank the fans and staff for all their support and, above all, wish all my fantastic former team-mates all the best for the future.”
