The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) urged the members of the National Conference to drop the current presidential system of government and get it replaced with parliamentary system.
This has been contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting between the CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, and the South-West leaders of the body, led by Archbishop Magnus Adeyemi Atilade. The negotiations were held in Ikeja, Lagos over the
weekend.
CAN said the presidential system was too costly for Nigeria to bear.
Therefore, it would be more beneficial to stop wasting the resources of the nation and to get a new system which would be more suitable for the country on the whole.
CAN observed that churches in Nigeria were under intense attack from what it called “the forces of evil” , with Christians being killed daily in the northern part the country.
“Christian schools are being closed down and churches are not being given approval or certificate of occupancy for development of churches,” it stated.
The body urged the Federal Government to address problems that could lead to religious uprising in the country.
It would be added that the National Conference receives a great number of proposals these days. Starting from creation of new states to Nigeria and finishing death penalty by hanging for corrupt officials.
