Google has announced at an event in Nairobi, Kenya graced by world technology leaders that two Nigerians and three others, had won its Africa Connected competition.
Google is one of the five most popular web search engines in the world.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos on Thursday,
Google listed the Nigerians as Eseoghene Odiete, a Fashion designer,
and Eric Obuh, a musician cum philanthropist.
Other winners, the statement said are: Christopher Panford, a
transporter from Ghana; Eunice Namirembe, a Physician from
Uganda and Sitawa Wafula, a blogger from Kenya.
It said that the competition, which was launched in August 2013 was
organised to reward young Africans who explore internet space to
their advantage.
The statement said entrepreneurs, creators, innovators and web-
lovers were asked to share stories of how the web had transformed
their lives and work.
It  quoted Mrs Affiong Osuchukwu, Google Lead for the Africa
Connected initiative as saying, “there are over one billion people living
in Sub-Saharan Africa and currently 16 per cent of them are online.
“With Africa Connected, we wanted to celebrate how the web is
changing lives in Africa, and show how it is contributing to the
socioeconomic development of the continent.
“Selecting the shortlist was no easy task: each winner shares a unique
perspective of how they have used the internet to solve a problem, earn
a living, or create opportunities, not just for themselves, but also for
others around them.
“Though there were only five winners of the contest, there were many
more powerful and inspiring stories out there.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the five winners,
who were selected by a panel of judges, as well as public votes from
over 2,200 entries from 35 countries, won $25,000 each.
The winners would also be given the opportunity to work with Google
on sponsorship for a six month period, to further their online successes.
